Panoramas have been around for at least a century. In the old days, though, you had to combine a series of photos using scissors, tape, and elbow grease. These days, smart software seamlessly integrates your photos with little or no effort on your part. In the past, I've told you the best ways to shoot a panoramic series of photos. This time around, I've got some recommendations for a few programs that will take your photos and stitch them together for free.

Image Composite Editor

The Image Composite Editor is one of those many Microsoft research projects that Microsoft has released into the wild for free.

This app stands apart in my book because it gives excellent results and supports absolutely enormous file sizes. If you have a large number of 12-megapixel photos, you can easily stitch them into a "gigapixel" panorama. It also supports some exotic file formats, like Silverlight's Deep Zoom mode that lets you zoom in--and in--and in--to ridiculous lengths. There are some excellent examples of this sort of thing at the Hard Rock Café Web site.

CleVR

CleVR is a bit different than the other panorama apps. This Web site takes your panoramic sources and stitches them not into a flat JPEG, but into a curved, interactive image. It's like the old "virtual reality" panoramas that were somewhat popular in the early days of digital photography--you can use your mouse to zoom and pan around your image, as if you're looking though a virtual window.

CleVR does best with panoramas that span a full 360 degrees, so you can totally immerse yourself in your scene, but you can make panoramas that are just several images wide, as well.

When you're done, you can save your panorama on CleVR and share it online with others.

Windows Live Photo Gallery

Windows Live Photo Gallery is my all-around favorite stitching program because not only does it do a superb job of making panoramas, but it's also a pretty good photo organizer, as well. I use Photo Gallery to manage my personal photo collection, and when I take a series of photo for conversion to a panorama, making that panorama is as easy as selecting the photos and then choosing from the Make menu. You don't have to fiddle with any settings, and the program creates a high quality, full-resolution panorama that you can save or share.

I'm also fond of Autostitch. It delivers good results, but more importantly, it requires no installation. This is a program that I leave on the 8GB USB memory key that I travel with; if I ever have to get some work done on someone else's PC, it's handy to have a suite of programs that can run directly from the memory key. It's not often that I want to stitch a panorama when I'm on a strange PC away from home, but it has happened, and Autostitch is always there for me.

Unlike Photo Gallery, Autostitch has a smorgasbord of settings to tweak, but you can also choose to ignore them and just import a slew of photos to transform into a panorama. If you are the tweaking sort, though, you can set the output size of the final image, the JPEG image quality, rendering settings, and more.

SmillaEnlarger is a free, open source program that enables enlarging/magnifying bitmap images in high quality. Based on original algorithms, this standalone software uses a number of filters that are designed to remove some of the typical artifacts generated by the enlarging process and “fill in” image information to achieve a much higher quality image than image enlargement algorithms typically employed in most applications.

If you work with images you will doubtlessly have seen situations where you would have liked to use a larger size image than what you had to work with but was not able to do so because of the quality degradation involved (e.g. pixellization/artifacts/loss of detail). What SmillaEnlarger can offer, in this case, is a handful of potentially very useful filters that can circumventing some of these problems in order to produce a high-quality enlarged version of an image. More notes below:

How it works: load your desired image, then use the controls on the left hand side to determine the new, desired size of the image (you can set the width/height, move the slider, or enter a value for the zoom % in the box; I set this to 400% in my example shown above). Next use the controls for the five filters on the right to manipulate the image; click “preview” to see the effect this has on the output image. Finally, click “calculate” to process.
Note on the “zoom box”: the purpose of this is solely to zoom in on an area with a lot of detail/artifacts/noise, in order to be able to visually evaluate what the filters are doing. Actual resizing happens using the controls underneath it.
The filters: five in total; Sharpness, Flatness, PreSharpen, Dithering, and DeNoise. If in doubt as to which values to use, start with all filters approx set to the middle value (this will likely produce a good result anyway). Experiment by changing and clicking preview.
Cropping the original image: right click on the original (left side) image and draw a selection with the mouse to crop it.
Formats supported: JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, PPM
Portable: all you have to do is unzip and run.

Wish list (or how this software can be even better):

Quick pre/post previews: the option to quickly show the original un-processed preview, and/or flip through the original preview without processing and the new preview post processing. Currently it seems the only way to do that is to click “undo clipping”, which strangely re-sets the position of the zoom box making instant comparisons impossible. Another cool option would be to have 2 windows showing simultaneously for pre/post processing.
Provide “suggested filter values”: which the program might calculate based on what it thinks is a good starting point. A “reset” button that centers all filter values would be nice too.
Rename the action button: for some reason its labeled “Calculate”, and it took me 10 whole minutes to figure out that that’s the action button, and I consider myself software savvy. “Go”, “Save”, or even “Process” would have been so much more intuitive.

The verdict: a very nice addition to you image-manipulation bag of tools (especially those of us who are not Photoshop wizards and cannot approximate this function with an arsenal of plug-ins)

This 'free' version is for personal use only and you do have to register. PhotoBasic3 does everything you want and ask for in a photo-organizer, it displays the albums as you would see them in Windows Explorer and then the real fun starts as you won't need a photo editor at all with this. If you do want to use a photo editor then there is a link that enables you to do this. When opened you will see three main panels, left hand side is the Album files and boxes of editing and web galleries links, the middle is the photo display and information below (the information can be adapted to your own requirements) and the left is the information bar. Note in this 'free' version - Timeline - Image Archive Filter - Print Project Pages are not available.

DigiBookShelf has been around since 2004 and it appears it has been left that way. This is no in-detriment to the software as it is in a class of its own and I enjoyed the virtual library. You do have to register to use all of the facilities, this is free. Set output width, not output resolution: you can tell Automen, for example, that you want your output video to be 640 pixels in width and it will determine what the height should be based on the input video aspect ratio. This is a good thing, as one thing I do NOT understand in most video converters is their insistence on the user defining the full, fixed output video resolution (e.g. 630×480), which is totally needless and in many situations results in converted movies with aspect ratios that are out of whack. Split output videos into multiple files: simply set the size in megs for each desired chunk to split into.
Process only video, only audio, or both: simply check the appropriate box in the “advanced settings” tab. You can extract (demux) audio tracks from video files by checking the audio tab and unchecking the video tab.
